This post shares useful language learning resources one may need during their undergraduate years in SUSTech. We will start with what SUSTech has to offer, including courses, workshops and subsidies, then move on to other useful (and free) online resouces suitable for students.

SUSTech Resources for English

Apart from SUSTech English courses (I II III and EAP), SUSTech Center for Language Education offers 1-on-1 Language Help Service and Full-amount Subsidy for IELTS, TOEFL and GRE.

  • 1-on-1 Language Help Service: Find within the app WeCom or Ehall: Workspace > CLE Language Help Service to make an appointment. You would sit face to face with an instructor, a perfect form to improve speaking fluency and to prepare for upcoming standardized tests.
  • Full-amount Subsidy for Standardized Tests: Students who scored no less than following thresholds can request for a subsidy that covers the registration fee via fllp.sustech.edu.cn:
      ▫ IELTS: Total 7.0, without any skill below 6.5;
      ▫ TOEFL: Total 100
      ▫ GRE: Total 330
      (Subsidy for each test can only be claimed once)

SUSTech Resources for Other Languages

For foreign students, SUSTech offers elective Mandarin courses.

Spanish and French are currently available as elementary courses (circa. A1 level), both presented by Prof. Miguel Angel Marquez Martinez.

Due to insufficient amount of interested students, Japanese and German would be instructed as non-credit workshop sessions starting from Spring 2026. Refer to school emails for timely intel.

Other Online Resources

TOEFL: Since January 2026, TOEFL have experienced radical shift in its test format. To get familiarized with the new TOEFL, here are some useful websites:

  • www.ets.org is the official website of ETS, the organization behind TOEFL. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and you’ll find a sample collection and two free full-length mock tests.
  • toeflpreps.com provides sufficient amount of interactive practice questions that let you get the hang of it pretty soon.
  • www.toeflresources.com offers more practice questions, although some of the questions require paid subscriptions.

German: As a state-supported free learning program, learngerman.dw.com provides comprehensive German learning materials that covers all levels from beginner A1 to advanced C2. (Hint: Try Nicos Weg! That’s how I got to B1 within 2 years)

Swedish: FinlandSwedishOnline is a free online website with interactive elementary Swedish online courses, supported by University of Helsinki and University of Iceland. Don’t be tricked by the attributive “Finland” in its name, for there really isn’t much difference between Swedish in Finland and in Sweden! Alternatively you may try Hej Svenska, which is part of an integrated scheme backed by the Swedish government to support new immigrants, but its UI design is not so good as FinlandSwedishOnline.
